The school welcomed Jesse Norman MP last Friday to join our celebration assembly and to have a tour of the school. It was a good opportunity for him to see us in action and for us as a school to share with him some of the areas that we feel work well alongside aspects that we will be developing in the future. Jesse is currently visiting a number of schools across the county and we were pleased to be able to accomodate him with a visit to Ashfield Park.
Maths Afternoon
Parents are warmly invited to attend a maths afternoon which is being organised by Mrs. Belinda Jones on Thursday 8th July from 2pm to 3pm. This will cover the different ways in which maths calculation is taught at Ashfield Park Primary School and will be aimed also at enabling you to support your child at home. The session will also provide you with an opportunity to see a Year 3 class and a Year 1 class in action with Mrs. Yearsley and Miss Harris showing how calculation is taught.
Congratulations to all those pupils who participated at the Youth Games event in Hereford city. The school had some notable success in Orienteering where we achieved a gold and in Tri-Golf and Tennis where we were awarded silver. The pupils seemed to have a thoroughly enjoyable day. Well done.
Thank you to the many of you who have responded to the annual parent questionnaire. Our curriculum governors are currently collating the results and these will then help support our School Improvement Plan.
A few parents have recently approached us about using childcare vouchers for our Breakfast Club, which has continued to be a real success for us this year. We are pleased to be able to inform you that as of September we will accept Childcare vouchers for Breakfast Club. If you would like to use this facility please contact the school bursar Mrs. Price.
Please take a few moments to watch the following photo slideshow courtesy of Mrs. Djiallis and her class which will give you a flavour of the day that we all shared.
It was a thoroughly enjoyable day out for the whole school and an opportunity to learn about buildings from different periods in Welsh history. May I take this opportunity to thank the many parents and volunteers who helped on the day, we really appreciate all that you did.
It was a pleasure in the last week of May to take the “Green Behaviour Pupils” on a local walk around the market town of Ross-on-Wye. The objective involved the pupils taking photographs of the local area and sharing a picnic together. It was lovely to see some of our older pupils supporting the younger ones in what was a really enjoyable experience.
Here are some of the pictures taken by the pupils, giving a flavour of the walk and the environment that surrounds our school.
The school has been very busy upgrading both playgrounds over the past week in an initiative that has seen the Friends of Ashfield Park, parents, the School Council and Green Box (positive behaviour pupils) working together.
The pupils must take all the credit for the designs and ideas which have been put into place. The maze is proving very popular with our Early Years and Key Stage 1 pupils, whilst the map and fitness circuit has proved popular in Key Stage 2.
A big thank you to FOAP for funding the project and to Mr. Matthews and his team for the work that has been carried out.
It has been a very busy day I am sure nationally, as people exercise the opportunity to vote. We have been having our own election campaign over the past few weeks, with our very own Year 4 students writing their manifestos, canvassing student opinion and holding leaders debates. It was a pleasure today to listen to the party political broadcasts and final speeches. I look forward to knowing the outcome of the results when they are announced. The winning party from each class will be able to spend £50; this has been donated by our School Council.
Well done 4D and 4M, you have really worked hard with this project.
A warm welcome back to you all after the Easter break.
Easter Holiday Opportunities
As a school we hosted two school based opportunities for our pupils during the second week of the Easter holidays. Booster revision classes were made available for our current Year 5 and 6 pupils alongside sports based activities which were accessible for pupils across the school and were operated by a company called Sports Stars. We would very much value your feedback if your child accessed any of these opportunities as we will consider offering similar activities in the future.
Whole School Trip
Due to the success of our whole school visit to Bristol Zoo last year, we have decided to offer a similar experience on Thursday 17th June. This year we will be visiting the Museum of Welsh Life which is located at St. Fagan’s near Cardiff. This offers pupils the opportunity to see buildings from different periods in History, experience woodland walks, a castle and beautiful grounds. We will not be asking for any Voluntary Contributions for this trip as the centre itself is free and the transport is covered by an extended services grant. You will be receiving a letter shortly outlining the day in more detail.
Year 4 and 5 information
We are providing all parents of pupils in Year 5 the opportunity to drop in and meet Miss. Myers who is their new class teacher on Tuesday 27th April from 3.20pm – 4.00pm. Miss. Taylor takes on the role as Phase Leader for year 4 and 5 for the summer term this year should you need to discuss anything.
Playground refurbishment
We have resurfaced part of the Key Stage 2 playground to improve the quality of the playing surface. We are also currently upgrading the area underneath the play trails which have become worn and will be laying new playground markings over the coming weeks in a project funded by FOAP. As you may have noticed, the picket fence that is visible from the front of the school has also been painted as part of a community project.
PGL French Trip 2011
I am pleased to be able to inform all our Year 5 pupils that we are planning our Residential trip to France again. Letters will be with you shortly.
